IMG And Tri-California Resolve Triathlon Naming Dispute

IMG Worldwide, owner and producer of the long established Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon and Tri-California, owner and producer of the recently announced 2010 “Alcatraz Triathlon” (which now will be called “The San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz”) have recently resolved differences arising from the similarity of the names of the two events and the confusion it created for some participants.
The parties’ agreement was reached without either party admitting wrongdoing, to avoid protracted litigation. IMG Worldwide will host the 30th annual Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon on Sunday, May 2, 2010 and as part of the recent agreement, Tri-California will rename its inaugural event “The San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz” which will take place August 29, 2010. The two races are in no way affiliated and entry to each race is entirely separate.
“We are pleased to have resolved our differences and addressed the confusion of some our race participants allowing us to move forward with our longtime event, The Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon,” said IMG’s Senior Vice President James Leitz. “For 30 years, the legendary Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon has attracted professional and amateur athletes from around the world with its challenging course including the famous swim from Alcatraz Island to the shore, hilly bike ride and grueling run through San Francisco and we look forward to continuing the tradition in 2010.”
The 2010 Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon is a marquee event within IMG’s established worldwide portfolio of 14-plus endurance events which includes the London Triathlon – the world’s largest, Triathlon Alpe d’Huez, Ironman Australia, the San Diego Triathlon, the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon and more.
“We are excited to move forward with our new San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz and complete our inaugural event”, says Terry Davis, CEO and President of Tri-California Events. ‘We will offer a traditional swim, bike, run triathlon with standard international distances (swim 1.2 mi, bike 25 mi, run 7 mi.). Elites, age group, collegiate and challenged athletes will all compete on the same course. The Leukemia Lymphoma Society and the Challenged Athletes Foundation are the benificeries of Tri-California Events and will also be involved in this event.”
