USA Triathlon today recognized Tamara Gorman and Tony Smoragiewicz, Junior Elite triathlon phenoms from Rapid City, S.D., as the 2013 Junior Triathletes of the Year.

See the announcement from USA Triathlon below:

Gorman made history again in 2013 when she became the first Junior American woman to finish at the top of the podium at the ITU Junior World Championships, bettering her bronze-medal position from the 2012 event. She also earned victories at the USA Triathlon Junior Elite National Championships and the Pan American Junior Championships. This is the second consecutive year that Gorman has been named USA Triathlon’s Junior Athlete of the Year.

“Tamara’s win at Junior Worlds was the pinnacle of a remarkable season,” said Steve Kelley, USA Triathlon Junior/U23 Program Manager. “At every level of competition she improved, and she handled the mounting pressures with a level head and grace. It’s a testament to her awesome support team, her parents and coach Jenny Weber.”

Smoragiewicz, a runner at the University of Michigan, claimed his first national title at the USA Triathlon Junior Elite National Championships in 2013. Like Gorman, Smoragiewicz also claimed the win at the Pan American Junior Championships, and he demonstrated his run prowess in London at the ITU Junior World Championships, where he logged the fourth fastest run split in the field of more than 70 junior men.

“Tony worked very hard this year to balance his obligations as a runner at Michigan and his goals for his final year as a junior,” Kelley said. “His victory in Brazil at the PATCO Junior Championships showed his competitive drive. I’m eager to see him make the transition to the U23 ranks over the next couple of years. He has a lot of untapped potential.”

Gorman and Smoragiewicz also earned recognition on USA Triathlon’s list of Junior Elite and Youth Elite All-Americans. The honor goes to the top up-and-coming triathletes in the United States and is based on their final national ranking and performance in top junior and youth draft-legal events.
