I ran my first ever triathlon in the UAE way back in 1999. It was only a sprint distance race; however, there were quite a few big names involved in a strong field and it all went very well.

But we were something of a mystery. An oddity, even for this part of the world. There were a few people based here, most if not all expats, who competed in or at least had heard of the sport.

That was it. Certainly, it was unheard of with Emiratis. And, anyway, who wants to swim, cycle and then run all on the same day in a desert? Changed days.
