Yesterday, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Emma Snowsill of Australia announced her retirement in a blog post. “It’s like that holiday that you never want to end,” she wrote. “It was wonderful, you had a great time, but you know at some point it has to finish.”
Snowsill mentions struggling with her health over the last four years—“ultimately my body helped make the decision for me that it didn’t have what it needed to compete at the highest level on the world stage anymore,” she wrote.
She’ll be staying busy by studying online at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, commentating at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as the expert commentator for triathlon, and will be an athlete role model at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in August.
Snowsill was known for her impressive ITU run speed, which helped her capture an Olympic gold medal, become a three-time ITU world champion and take home the largest prize purse in the sport at Hy-Vee. She was controversially left off of the Australian 2012 Olympic team. She’s married to fellow 2008 Olympic gold medalist Jan Frodeno of Germany, who is racing on the Ironman 70.3 circuit and plans to make his Kona debut this October.
“It’s with a hint of sadness, but mostly excitement and all the other emotions that come along with ending an incredibly amazing time in my life. I have got off that plane from my professional triathlon career. Next destination/s are abundant, the choices are truly mine to explore,” she wrote. “As they say: ‘As one door closes, another opens.’ I’m excited to work on the next room, it’s time I took my foot out of the way.”
