Every year I make a point of attending one of the most important triathlon events of the season in Boulder, the IronKids race, which took place last Saturday prior to the Ironman 70.3. I love watching and cheering for the hundreds of youngsters that tackle the swim, bike and run challenge–some as fledgling triathletes and some as seasoned veterans returning year after year. I’m especially obsessed with serving as cheerleader for two little girls close to my heart, Jamo (Jamieson) and Camo (Camryn) Legh, daughters of Chris and Sarah Legh.

The Legh girls are naturally talented and competitive–no doubt influenced by both genetics (their father is an Ironman champion, their mother a gifted athlete in her own right) and their environment (the girls have literally grown up on the triathlon circuit). It’s cool to watch them stroke, cycle and stride with complete confidence and to follow their budding sporting careers year after year. Jamo, now eight, debuted at the IronKids event three years ago, while last weekend marked four-year-old Camo’s second race start. Of course as a journalist (as well as an honorary Auntie) I couldn’t resist the urge to interview the up and coming stars following their race finishes.

Triathlete.com: Jamo, you were flying at the finish! How do you think your race went?
JL: Good. Because I sprinted to beat a boy in the finish chute.

Triathlete.com: What have you done since last year to improve your fitness?
JL: Well, I’ve been riding my bike along the street more. And I’ve been riding with Mom. And I’ve been doing lots of swimming. So I think that all helps.

Triathlete.com: I can’t help but notice that you still run in sparkly ballet flats, as you’ve done every year, rather than running shoes. What’s up with that? Do they help your running?
JL: I’m not sure–they’re just easier to get on.

Triathlete.com: Camo, now that you’re a seasoned pro, what is your favorite part of the race?
CL: Um…the hill!

Clearly there’s no doubt as to her triathlon heritage. Congratulations to all the young athletes that competed on Saturday!
