Sweden’s Jonas Colting and the United States’ Hillary Biscay lead the 2010 Ultraman World Championships after one day of competition on the Big Island of Hawaii. Colting completed 6.2 miles of swimming in 7:28:44, with Biscay finishing in 8:17:09 in yesterday’s kick off day.
The most thrilling moment of the day featured the last competitor to cross the finish line. Age group competitor Martin Franklin suffered after the swim leg and was barely able to complete the 90-mile bike ride. He crossed the line at 11:59:59, just one second shy of the cut off time.
The Ultraman World Championships are made up of three days of competition. On Saturday athletes will take on 171.4 miles of cycling, followed by a double marathon (52.4 miles) on Sunday.
This year, the 27 Ultraman World Championship participants came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Slovenia, and the USA.
Participation is by invitation only and all athletes must have competed in either Ultraman Canada or Ultraman World Championships and have completed at least an Ironman distance race in the 18 months prior.
