On April 18, Ryan Hall ran the fastest ever marathon run by an American at the Boston Marathon, where he finished fourth in 2:04:58. Although the time doesn’t officially count as a new record (because the course is a point-to-point course, where tailwinds can help performance, and because the course is considered “downhill” due to the elevation drop from start to finish), it was an impressive breakout performance by Hall, who sought advice from triathlon coach and owner of San Francisco-based Purplepatch Fitness, Matt Dixon (who also writes the “Dear Coach” column in Triathlete magazine).
