British Columbia community Vernon is reportedly trying to decide if they want to bid for an Ironman event that will take place on the same weekend as Challenge Penticton, which is 70 miles away.
Vernon council will hold a special meeting September 21st to decide if they want to bid on hosting Ironman Canada in 2013.
Mayor Rob Sawatzky says the economic spinoff is at least ten million. Vernon council needs more info on issues like sponsorship and volunteers, which will be looked at by staff to see if Ironman is something Vernon wants to host.
Mayor Sawatzky says several communities have been asked to submit proposals. He says the event will be held the same weekend as Penticton’s new Challenge event and he believes other communities being considered are Calgary, Kamloops, Kelowna and Whistler.
Satatzky doesn’t like being in competition with Penticton, because Ironman plans to keep their same date, but he says Ironman appeals to a different group of athletes.
