Despite taking a break from Ironman racing, four-time Ironman world champ Chrissie Wellington is still staying involved in the endurance sports world. On April 15, she’ll be setting off on an eight-day challenge, bookended by the Paris and London marathons, she’ll spend six days biking between from Paris to Yorkshire to London (about 600 miles).
The challenge is part of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, a nonprofit started by the late Jane Tomlinson that raises funds for children’s and cancer charities. Tomlinson was diagnosed with metastatic advanced breast cancer in 2000 and given six months to live, but ended up living until 2007 and in the meantime completed an Ironman, two half-Ironmans, the London Marathon three times, the New York Marathon, the London Triathlon three times and three long-distance bike rides. During those final seven years, she raised 1.85 million British pounds for charity. Wellington has been a patron of the organization since 2010, and even wrote about Tomlinson in her autobiography A Life Without Limits: A World Champion’s Journey (to be released in the U.S. on May 15).
The run-bike-run challenge is in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Tomlinson’s first running of the London Marathon. Wellington will be joining Mike Tomlinson (Jane’s husband) and Rebecca Tomlinson (their daughter) to raise funds for the organization.
“I am so incredibly honored to be a patron of Jane’s Appeal, and this amazing challenge is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to combine my masochistic love for endurance challenges with the ability to raise awareness and funds for an amazing and incredibly worthwhile cause,” Wellington said on the Jane Tomlinson Appeal website. “The other challenge team members can rest assured, I won’t be trying to set new personal best times. I want to complete and not compete!”
Until April 6, the Jane Tomlinson Appeal is also auctioning off the opportunity to ride with Wellington for a day during the six-day ride. Visit Janetomlinsonappeal.com for more information.
