The Norfolk, Va. triathlon has been running since 1992.

The Breezy Point Triathlon has been canceled because of new security measures at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia following the shooting on the USS Mahan.

The Breezy Point Triathlon has been produced by the Tidewater Striders, a local running club, since 1992, and takes place at Naval Station Norfolk and in the adjacent Willoughby Bay. This year’s event was scheduled for Sunday, June 1 at 8 a.m., but the group announced Thursday afternoon it has been cancelled.

“Due to the shooting tragedy a few weeks ago, the base advised us on Monday that they are requiring background checks on every athlete, volunteer, guest, committee member, vendor, etc. We would need to collect the first, middle and last names, social security numbers and birth dates for all wishing to go through the gate,” said Brian Sagedy, a Tidewater Striders spokesman.
