With the first round of pro Ironman World Championship qualifiers set to be announced in just under seven weeks, the Kona Pro Rankings are starting to take shape.
As we reach the middle of June, it is becoming more obvious how important a top finish at the Ironman World Championship is if an athlete hopes to return to Kona the following year without having to play the points-chasing game. Placing in the top-10 on the Big Island guarantees a pro at least 2500 points toward the rankings for the following Ironman World Championship. This is important when you consider that the majority of Ironmans offer 2000 points or less for the winners.
Another key statistic to look at as the first KPR deadline approaches is who still has to complete the criteria that an athlete must finish an Ironman race within the qualifying year. While a few athletes, like Craig Alexander and Mirinda Carfrae, chose to get that recquirement done early in the year, several still need to validate their entries.
