Alistair Brownlee Second In Heat At Jordan Payton Invitational 10K

Olympic triathlon gold medalist Alistair Brownlee posted a 10K time of 28:32:48.

Alistair Brownlee finished second in his heat in the 10K at the Jordan Payton Invitational at Stanford University. The event is a prestigious event with a qualifying time of 28:50 (or a reasonable equivalent).

Brownlee was in the second of two heats on the day, crossing the line in 28:32:48, just under two seconds behind the eventual winner of the heat (Jose Antonio Uribe Marin – 28:30:80). The second heat was widely regarded as the slower of the two, and this proved to be the case with the winner of the first heat (Ben St. Lawrence) coming home in 27:37:55. Overall, Brownlee’s 10K time was 18th fastest (complete results here).

To his credit, Brownlee did not have a lot of time to prepare for the race. Last weekend he was busy demolishing the field at the ITU World Triathlon Series San Diego, where he ran a 29:30 10km (his previous best recorded time in an open 10K was 29:15).

Brownlee had previously said that he planned to a run a 10K on the track in a bid to qualify for the English Commonwealth Games team in 2014. However, changes to the selection standards would have undoubtedly had an impact on the Olympic triathlon gold medalist. Brownlee now has to achieve either the A standard of 27:50 or at least the B standard of 28:10. In addition, he’d also have to beat the likes of Olympic 10,000m champ Mo Farah and top British runner Chris Thompson. And, as Brownlee noted previously to BBC, when it comes to running Farah and him are worlds apart.

After the race, Brownlee wrote on Twitter: “Loved running on the track at Stanford tonight. Learnt that 68′s felt easy at 3k and 69′s felt hard at 8k. Can’t wait for another go.”
