British man endures heat to take double iron-distance race in Spain.

Cleethorpes triathlete Paul Thompson overcame the heat – and a tough Belgian opponent – to win the Enduroman Lanzarote double iron triathlon.

The event required Thompson to swim 7.6km, bike 360km and run 84km.

The 44-year-old joiner conquered the course in a time of 24 hours 14 minutes.

Unusually for triathlons of this length, the race went down to the wire.

Thompson and Belgian Rudy van Aelst were still together on the run phase, but it was Thompson who gradually edged ahead and held off his rival to triumph after more than a full day of constant physical and mental exertion.

He said: “The temperature while on the bike rose to around [73] degrees. Later on, around four hours of the bike stage was in darkness, so a good lighting system was required while cycling through the lava fields.”
