3T Recalls Aura Pro Cervelo Custom Edition Aerobars

3T has announced today that it is voluntarily recalling all Aura Pro Cervélo Custom Edition aerobars for safety reasons.
The recall involves replacing the bolts that attach the extension clamps to the basebar. These clamps may detach during use, posing a fall or injury hazard to the rider. Replacement bolts are sent free of charge, as detailed below. In the U.S., this recall program is being managed under the auspices of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Who’s affected: Customers who have bicycles fitted with Aura Pro Cervélo Custom Edition aerobars should stop riding them at once and contact 3T for the required safety upgrade. The company says they will send you a kit of 4 longer replacement bolts free of charge.
How to identify the bar: This recall involves only Aura Pro Cervélo Custom Edition aerobars supplied on these 2013-model bikes:
• Cervélo P3 with Shimano Ultegra
• Cervélo P5 Three with SRAM Red
These were sold as complete bikes from September 2012 to January 2013.
The recalled Cervélo Custom Edition aerobar that is part of these bikes’ standard equipment has wider armrests than the standard 3T Aura Pro. Armrests have 4 cradle-clamp bolt locations. (Standard Aura Pro armrests have only one cradle-clamp bolt location.) It was supplied in only one version and color, finished in gloss black with a white 3T logo on the basebar’s top surface. Aerobars that have green stickers on the clamps, or that have black bolts (on the underside of affected clamps) have already been retrofitted with the new, longer bolts.
No other 3T aerobar is part of this recall.
“We’re truly sorry that owners of these fine bicycles have this problem with our bars,” said a 3T official in a press release. “But we must put the safety of all riders first. Fitting the new bolts is quite easy for anyone with basic mechanical skill, but do take advice if you’re not sure – and if you can, use a torque wrench to ensure the bolts are tightened to the correct torque setting.”
