A new Ironman Australia triathlon course has been announced for the May 1 event in Port Macquarie.

It involves a two lap instead of a three lap bike course, which will extend further south to include the towns of Laurieton and Dunbogan.

The race finish has also been moved to Port Macquarie’s Town Green to make it more spectator friendly.

The event marketing director Trent Taylor says the new course will focus on scenic waterfront areas and local residents will be consulted about road closures.

“The bike course wasn’t a whimsical decision by any means and we assessed a number of course options, we worked with the RTA, Events New South Wales and the Council obviously to develop the course,” he said.
