What’s it like to run into a group of cows during a race?
ITU pros Natalie Milne of Great Britain and Anja Knapp of Germany were forced to dodge cows during a steep downhill section of the run at the ITU World Triathlon Kitzbühel race, held in the Central Eastern Alps in Austria.
After the initial shock of seeing two cows on the course, Milne’s second thought was, “I started to worry what the cows would do,” she says. “The one that was standing on the road was just standing staring at me, so I stared back at it, hoping that it wouldn’t charge at me.”
Likewise, Knapp “was really scared — the cow on the left was about to run into me,” she says.
Touted as the most difficult race on the WTS circuit due to the mostly uphill course, Kitzbühel lived up to its reputation. “I was very impressed with the course,” says Milne of her first WTS race. “I’ve never done a triathlon that was as hard as that, and I’m still recovering four days after the race.”
