Since re-launching in January, Inside Triathlon has continually raised the sports journalism and design bars. In the September/October issue, on newsstands August 18, Inside Triathlon offers up profiles on everyone from the mastermind of the Olympic triathlon and the sport’s first superstar quintet to a photographic tribute to Steve Larsen.
The issue opens with an in-depth look at the man some call triathlon’s greatest villain, others it’s virtuoso: former ITU president Les McDonald. In a rare, post-retirement interview, McDonald sat down with Inside Triathlon assistant editor Susan Grant and talked candidly about his controversial history. Talking to critics, co-workers and even family members of the notoriously fiery man, Grant was able to get the full scoop on the man behind the legend.
Outside Magazine’s own Stephanie Pearson joins the Inside Triathlon line-up this month with her profile on the idiosyncrasies of triathlon’s rising star and resident gear-head—T.J. Tollakson. Pearson joined Tollakson in New Orleans, where yet another disappointing race for the Iowa-born wrestler-turned-triathlete gave Pearson the unique opportunity to report on what a top triathlete’s life is like when he’s planning his next big move.
Editor-in-chief T.J. Murphy traveled to the southern tip of Mississippi to find one of the sport’s budding superstars—Margot Hair—who happens to spend most of her days underground in a top-secret area working for the U.S. Department of Defense. The current Best of the U.S. champion will race as a professional for the first time next year, and, as Murphy discovered, won’t let anything (including a cancer diagnosis) keep her from reaching the top.
In a tribute to the best cyclist the triathlon world has ever seen, this month’s gallery is devoted to Steve Larsen, showcasing the talent and drive that left us far too soon.
Stay tuned for Inside Triathlon’s forthcoming issue on nutrition this fall.
