Organizers cited "several external circumstances" beyond their control
In what will feel like déjà vu for many triathletes, the organizers of the Wildflower Experience have announced that the event has been cancelled for 2019. In an email to athletes who had registered for the May 3-5, 2019 event, organizers cited “several external circumstances” beyond their control as the reason for the decision not to hold this year’s event.
The Wildflower Experience has had its share of struggles over the past decade. The iconic event was run on an altered course from 2013 to 2016 due to drought conditions—which resulted in decreasing registration numbers. Race director Terry Davis was forced to put the event weekend on hold in 2017, marking the first year since 1983 that the race did not take place. It was a sad announcement for the triathlon community because no one knew what “on hold” meant. Would Wildflower ever return?
Race production company Motiv Group purchased Wildflower, keeping Davis involved, and brought it back in a big way in 2018—adding other events, like live music, yoga classes, a trail run, and a stand-up paddleboard race. The 2018 weekend was a huge hit among the participants and industry, making this year’s cancellation even more puzzling.
The email closes by promising to bring back the Wildflower Experience in 2020.
We’ve reached out to Wildflower organizers and will update this story as more information is available.
