Americans Get 3 Podium Spots In 2019 ITU Opener

South Africa’s beautiful capital city was once again the setting for ITU’s now traditional season opener, the sprint-distance Cape Town World Cup. Warm February sunshine was offset by some blustery wind and cold waters to keep the athletes on their toes.

Japan’s experienced Ai Ueda stepping up for the women’s gold in 57:23 and Great Britain’s newest talent Alex Yee producing his first World Cup triumph in 52:04, both thanks to exquisite runs.

It was also a great weekend for Americans as we enter the Olympic qualifying year. Summer Rappaport (née Cook) claimed the silver medal in the women’s race in 57:31 seconds, picking up where she left off at the end of the 2018 season where she won the World Cup finale in Miyazaki, Japan. Tamara Gorman (USA) finished in 57:44 to earn the bronze medal, claiming her first podium finish in an ITU World Cup event since May 2018. In the men’s race, Tony Smoragiewicz (USA) claimed his first career ITU World Cup medal with the silver, finishing in 52:19 in a sprint to the finish with eventual third-place finisher Joao Silva.
