There are a lot of chili recipes out there, but this turkey chili one will definitely stand out. While it is simple and inexpensive to prepare, there are a few tricks build into the recipe that make it really special.
- 1 (20 oz) package 93% lean ground turkey
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 1 TBSP olive oil
- 2 TBSP chili powder
- 1 ½ TBSP ground cumin
- 1 tsp sea salt
- ½ tsp fresh cracked pepper
- 1 ½ TBSP pure maple syrup
- 2 TBSP all-purpose or whole-wheat flour
- 12 oz light ale (blonde ale or sessions pale ale work good)
- 1 (28 oz) can diced tomatoes
- 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans
- 1 (15 oz) can black beans
- 1 (15 oz) can white beans
- ¼ cup diced jalapenos, optional for extra heat
- In a large soup pot, Dutch/French oven, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for about 5 minutes, until golden.
- Add the chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground turkey and sauté for about 8-10 minutes, breaking apart the turkey with a wooden spoon.
- Trick one: Add the maple syrup and trick two: add the flour, and stir with a wooden spoon until the flour has dissolved. The slight sweetness from the maple syrup will help bring out the spices. The flour will help thicken all the juices in the chili giving it the perfect thick, comforting consistency.
- Trick three: Beer makes chili taste amazing! Add the beer and the diced tomatoes and let bubble for 5 minutes.
- Last, add the beans, and optional jalapeno and let simmer on medium-low (uncovered) for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let cool slightly before serving.
