Bozzone collided with a truck during a bike ride on Tuesday afternoon in Kumeu, Auckland.
New Zealand triathlon professional Terenzo Bozzone, 33, has been seriously injured after being hit by a truck during a bike ride on Tuesday afternoon in Kumeu, Auckland. An eyewitness who was first on the scene told Stuff.co.nz that the truck initially stopped but then drove off at speed.
Bozzone was taken to Auckland City Hospital in serious condition. According to Stuff.co.nz his condition has been upgraded to stable.
The news was confirmed by both Bozzone’s team on Instagram and his sponsor, Bahrain Endurance 13.
“Terenzo was in an accident this afternoon in Kumeu,” an Instagram post states. “He is in the emergency department where his injuries are still being assessed. If anyone has any information please contact Henderson Police. We would appreciate if you could respect the privacy of our family at this time. For any further media inquiries please contact the Auckland Police media line.”
Bozzone and his wife, Kelly, have two young children together and are based out of Auckland’s North Shore.
Bozzone, the 2008 Ironman 70.3 world champion, won Ironman New Zealand in his 10th attempt at the race back in March and was expected to be a contender for the Ironman World Championship podium in October after finishing a career-best sixth place in 2017.
