Nascar star Jimmie Johnson is known for participating in triathlons in and out of his racing season, but he got more than he bargained for while competing at Sunday’s HITS Naples half-iron distance triathlon in Florida. The race car driver completed the swim in 29:38, and then got in a bit of trouble on the bike. “That was a LONG and lonely 72.3,” He posted on Instagram. “Yes 72.3, I’m the guy that missed a turn and added a few miles. A huge thanks to my family for all the support, nothing like seeing them at the end.”

Despite the blunder, Johnson completed bike in 2:35:29 and the run in 1:33:59, to finish 15th overall in 4:42:10.

Johnson revealed his goal to Naplenews.com in a post-race interview. “I was hoping to do 4 (hours), 30 (minutes),” he said. “Without those extra couple of miles, I think I would have been there.”

Johnson also took the time to recognize Fireman Rob, who completes the run in triathlon’s all over the world wearing full fireman gear weighing 50 pounds.

“Mad props on many levels,” Johnson Tweeted. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw you running in all the gear.”
