Similar to pack riding and running, a group dynamic in the pool is motivational and just more fun. Group swim workouts can easily be adapted to accommodate all levels. Here are a couple of ways to tweak any set:
• Warm up for a fixed amount of time (e.g. seven minutes) instead of a certain number of yards. Each swimmer can watch the clock and finish at the same time. This allows everyone to start the next set together.
• Choose any interval for the main set but let each swimmer choose the distance. With two minutes, for example, the A-level swimmer can decide to swim 175, while the B swimmer does 100 and the C swimmer does 75. Starting and resting at the same time can be a motivator for all three athletes.
• During a long swim, set a challenge with another athlete. Agree on the number of times the A swimmer should lap the B swimmer during a 1000, for example. During the set, swimmer A is challenged to lap swimmer B more times than agreed upon while swimmer B is trying to get lapped as few times as possible.
