Three-time Ironman world champion Craig Alexander announced that he is planning to race at the Ironman Asia-Pacfic Championships in Melbourne on March 23, 2014. Though a finish will give him an automatic spot on Ironman World Championship line in October, Alexander maintains that he doesn’t plan to return to the Big Island. “After Kona last year, I felt very strong that was going to be my last appearance on the Big Island, and I still feel that way,” he says. “To be honest there’s not any desire to validate for Kona,” he continued later in the video. “I’ve maintained I’m looking for ways to prolong my career and maintain my ability to race at a high level. I’m at the point in my career where I only want to do one Ironman a year.”
Alexander won the inaugural Melbourne race in 2012. He competed in last year’s race just days after the birth of his third child and finished second to Eneko Llanos.
